Eight weeks, not too long
Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam’s Thug Life is one of the most anticipated films this year. After a theatrical run, the film will stream on OTT on August 7, eight weeks after its June 5 cinema release. At a promotional event in New Delhi, on Monday, Kamal explained the decision to opt for an eight-week theatrical window for Thug Life and how he hopes others will follow suit. The movie will break the mould with an eight-week OTT window, unlike most Tamil films, including Thalapathy Vijay’s GOAT (2023), which typically follow a four-week window. About this decision, Kamal said, “We requested them [OTT platforms], it was not a negotiation or deal breaker. We wanted them to do this for us. Both the company and OTT platform are experimenting this together. And if it works, we would have made it easier to do both the businesses.” Earlier, at an event in Mumbai, he had said, “It’s the pragmatic thing to do. I am glad that the OTT partners sat down with us and agreed. It wasn’t a negotiation, it was a plan. We hope others can follow this.”

The Bollywood debut of Govinda’s son, Yashvardhan Ahuja, has apparently hit a roadblock after Babil suddenly exited the Hindi remake of the Telugu film Baby (2023). The project, directed by Sai Rajesh, was set to begin filming on May 5, but Babil’s public display of distress on social media sparked a heated online exchange with the director, leading to his departure. With Babil out, the producers are now reportedly searching for a replacement, putting the production on indefinite hold.

Akshay Kumar’s Housefull 5 is set to hit theatres on June 6, with Akshay and Sajid Nadiadwala reuniting for the fifth instalment of the franchise. In a unique move, the producers reportedly submitted two different versions of the film to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), both of which have received a ‘U/A’ certificate. The reason behind this unusual step is being kept under wraps, but sources tell us that it is a part of a larger plan to surprise the audience. With a star-studded cast, including Abhishek Bachchan, Riteish Deshmukh, Nargis Fakhri, Jacqueline Fernandez, and Sonam Bajwa, the film’s run time will be two-hours-and-43 minutes. The film’s trailer will be out today.

Saif Ali Khan’s 2012 rom-com Cocktail is set for a theatrical re-release on May 30, nearly 13 years after its original release. PVR Cinemas announced the re-release on Instagram, sharing a poster featuring Saif, Deepika Padukone, and Diana Penty. The caption read, “The iconic trio is back! Experience the unforgettable journey of Cocktail once again with our curated shows.” Directed by Homi Adajania, the film received mixed reviews by critics but received love for the film’s music, styling and performances. Its soundtrack, composed by Pritam, featured hit songs like Tumhi ho bandhu and Second-hand jawaani. Fans are awaiting the film’s re-release as it will allow them to relive the memorable story of Veronica, Gautam, and Meera’s friendship and love.
