Zubeen Garg
Zubeen Garg, also known as Ya Ali, passed away in a freak scuba diving accident in Singapore on Friday. He was 52. Ashok Singhal, the Assam Cabinet Minister, confirmed the singer's death on social media on Friday afternoon.
Ashok Singhal penned a note
“Deeply saddened by the untimely demise of our beloved Zubeen Garg. Assam has lost not just a voice, but a heartbeat. Zubeen da was more than a singer; he was the pride of Assam and the nation, whose songs carried our culture, our emotions, and our spirit to every corner of the world,” the minister posted on X (former Twitter).
Ashok Singhal further wrote, “In his music, generations found joy, solace, and identity. His passing leaves behind a void that can never be filled. Assam has lost its dearest son, and India has lost one of its finest cultural icons. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and countless fans. May his soul find eternal peace, and may his legacy continue to inspire forever. Om Shanti.”
Zubeen was in Singapore for a festival
Zubeen had a critical Scuba diving accident. The Singapore police rescued him from the sea and rushed him to the hospital. He was promptly sent to a local hospital in Singapore by ambulance, where physicians were administering emergency care in the ICU and closely monitoring his status.
Zubeen had travelled to Singapore for the North East Festival, where he was due to perform today.
Papon, Pritam and others express grief
Popular Assamese singer-composer Papon took to Instagram and wrote that he was shocked. “This is so shocking! The voice of a generation! Gone too soon. At a loss of words! Lost a friend. Lost a brother. A big void. Praying for a peaceful journey of his soul,” he wrote alongside Zubeen's photo. Composer and Music Director Pritam also shared a heartfelt note for Zubeen as they worked together for Ya Ali, he wrote, “Zubeen Garg, losing his life in an accident is just the most terrible and saddest news. Still trying to come to terms with it. My deepest condolences to Garima and his family. Om Shanti,” he said.
Rahul Vaidya also wrote, "This is such a shock, very unfortunate for all of us in the world of music. I am still unable to process it. The loss of a precious life, especially in this way, is so sad. My prayers are with his family and loved ones."
