In June 2024, ex-NCT vocalist Taeil and two friends were convicted of sexually assaulting an intoxicated foreign woman in an Itaewon disco. He was sentenced to 3.6 years in prison under South Korea’s sexual crimes law
Taeil
Former NCT vocalist Taeil agreed to sexual assault charges and issued a 'sincere apology' to the victim during the first session of his appeal trial. It was Taeil's first hearing after appealing his 3.6-year jail sentence for special quasi-rape under the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes.
Taeil admits all his crimes
In June 2024, Taeil and two friends were convicted of sexually assaulting an intoxicated foreign woman they met in an Itaewon disco. During the appeal trial, Taeil argued that "I acknowledge all my sins and reflect on them. Above all, I know that words or actions cannot completely heal the wounds the victim feels. Nevertheless, I take this opportunity to offer my sincere apology."
Taeil went on to add, "I will live the rest of my life atoning for my sins. I will never commit a crime again. I will live honestly, never forgetting the weight of the law. I once again apologize for the harm I have caused. I am truly sorry."
While Taeil requested clemency and a reduced jail term, prosecutors contended that 3.5 years is insufficient and demanded 7 years.
The court will issue its decision on October 17.
All about the case
Taeil made his K-pop debut in 2016 as a member of NCT U, followed by NCT 127. He rapidly acquired recognition for his powerful voice and became an important part of the group's long-term success. However, things took a dangerous turn in 2024, when a case against him was revealed. Following this, his exclusive contract with the agency was officially terminated in August 2024, and he was expelled from the group.
The controversy didn't end there. Fans and the general public were outraged when it was revealed that Taeil continued to appear on social media livestreams and even attended fan events despite previously being charged in the case.
