The Malayalam film Premam, directed by Alphonse Puthren, was released in 2015. This coming-of-age romantic drama struck a chord with the youth, making it a classic. The film became part of pop culture, with its characters, dialogues, story, and music becoming a sensation not only in Kerala but across the country. It arrived at a time when non-Malayalee audiences were just discovering the beauty of the Kerala film industry.

Vinay Forrt's star act

While George (Nivin Pauly)'s love story was at the center of the plot, many other elements in the film stood out and continue to be memorable even a decade later.

Among them is the performance by Vinay Forrt, who played an innocent teacher in the college where our lead character meets and falls in love with Malar teacher. But silently, Vinay Forrt's character, Vimal, also loses his heart to Malar. Each day, he tries to find the courage to express his undying love for Malar Miss—even as it takes a comical turn when he seeks help from fellow PT teacher Sivan (Soubin Shahir).

The 10-second spotlight

In just a 10-second scene, Vinay Forrt managed to deliver an iconic moment. It was quite a simple scene (pun intended). The scene required him to teach students about Java. The blackboard associates Java with words like “simple” and “powerful.” Forrt elaborates with an innocent tone and a tinge of hesitation in a regional Malayalm accent:

"Java is very simple. Java is powerful. And it is really safe."

As he says it, scattered laughter erupts in the classroom—creating one of the most memorable moments of the film.

Both Vinay and Soubin’s characters form a memorable duo against the backdrop of the romance blooming between Malar Miss and George. While they may be part of a side plot, their impact on the film is long-lasting. Whether it is Forrt singing a song dedicated to Malar or the canteen scene with Sivan and George, Forrt and Shahir elevated every scene with their effortless performances.

Vinay Forrt celebrates 10 years of Premam

As the film completed 10 years, Vinay took to his Instagram handle to share some memorable moments from the film. The stills featuring him and Soubin immediately took fans of the movie down memory lane. Most comments were fans reliving the memories of the Java scene and is proof of his performance living rent-free in people's minds.
