The hit-and-run incident reportedly occurred in Guwahati's Dakhingaon locality around 3 am on July 25. The victim, identified as Samiul Haque, was a student at Nalbari Polytechnic. Haque, who also worked for the Guwahati Municipal Corporation, had been working on a light project. While he was returning home, a speeding Scorpio allegedly driven by Kashyap ran him over, according to eyewitness reports.

Additionally, the actor did not stop to help the injured student and fled after the incident, the eyewitness said. The victim eventually succumbed in the hospital last night. His colleagues, who chased the vehicle after the hit-and-run incident, later traced the car to an apartment in Kahilipara, where the actress was allegedly trying to hide her SUV. Videos showing a heated confrontation between them and the actor have since gone viral.

The Guwahati police arrested the actress following public outrage.

Public outrage

Public outrage erupted after Kashyap was reportedly allowed to leave following police questioning on July 28. Since then, social media had been flooded with criticism, accusing authorities of special treatment to the celebrity. Following the outrage, she was finally detained after Samiul’s death, while she was returning from a theatre performance in North Guwahati.

Dispur Police have booked Kashyap under charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, rash and negligent driving, hit-and-run, and destruction of evidence. The senior police officials reportedly assured that the investigation will be impartial and that “no one will be spared, regardless of their status.”

"We arrested actor Nandini Kashyap today in the hit-and-run case. Earlier, we had only questioned her since the case was initially filed under bailable sections. However, last evening, the victim died due to his injuries. So we added charges of culpable homicide amounting to murder, which is non-bailable. We have arrested her and will produce her in a local court," Jayanta Sarathi Borah, DCP (Traffic), Guwahati Police, told reporters.

Meanwhile, Rajdhani Theatre, with which Kashyap had a two-year acting contract, has severed ties with the actress. The company issues a statement, saying, “We express our deepest condolences to the family of Samiul Haque. We stand by the demand for justice and have decided to terminate our association with Ms. Nandini Kashyap with immediate effect.”
