Saroja Devi's eyes donated after her demise, actress registered five years ago

Saroja Devi "had spoken about pleading her eyes a few years ago," according to her physician. Her last rites were held on Tuesday.

 

 

An official at the eye bank mentioned, "She had spoken about pleading her eyes a few years ago, and once, when she came to the hospital for a checkup, she spoke to our chairman about her desire to donate her eyes and a card was made for eye donation. It has been about five years since she registered for eye donation."

 

In response, he told reporters that she had donated her eyeballs, which would be implanted in a few days. "Only corneas have been taken, both her corneas are in good condition...."

 

According to Vokkaliga customs, the famed actor's final rites would be performed on Tuesday in her hometown of Dasavara village, which is situated in Channapatna taluk in Bengaluru South (Ramanagara) district, her son Gowtham informed reporters.

 

In the Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, and Kannada cinema industries, Saroja Devi contributed to more than 200 films. 'Abhinaya Saraswathi' and 'Kannadathu Paingili' were the titles she was given during her career. The 'first female superstar of Kannada film' was another title she held.

The Indian government awarded her the Padma Shri in 1969 and the Padma Bhushan in 1992. She also received an honorary doctorate from Bangalore University and the Tamil Nadu government's Kalaimamani Award. 

Many celebrities penned heartfelt condolences for the veteran actress. Actress Simran Bagga wrote, 'The iconic Saroja Devi amma is no more, but her legacy in Indian cinema will remain eternal. I was blessed to share the screen with her in Once More, a moment of pride that feels even more precious today. My deepest respects and prayers, may her soul rest in peace. Om Shanti.' While many of her fans also expressed their condolences to Saroja's family.
