After the South Africa recce doesn’t result in finding the desired locations, sources close to production reveal that SS Rajamouli will now film ‘SSMB29’ in Tanzania. The film stars Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra in lead roles

First Kenya, now South Africa — it looks like SS Rajamouli has had a hard time locking the international schedule of his next, the working title of which is SSMB29. Earlier this month, mid-day reported that the filmmaker had to cancel his plan of shooting the Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra, and Prithviraj Sukumaran-starrer in Kenya, and was instead considering South Africa and Tanzania (Plan B for Rajamouli, July 14). Now, we have heard that the South Africa leg has been scrapped after an extensive recce failed to meet the logistical requirements of the jungle adventure that reportedly sees the protagonist as an archaeologist.
A source close to the production revealed, “While the regions of South Africa they visited were stunning, they didn’t align with the on-screen world that Rajamouli had in mind. He wants a landscape that has an untamed and ancient vibe. Tanzania fits that vision better. The team had already locked Tanzania along with South Africa, but now it is the only location.”
The South Africa recce has, however, led to a slight delay in the schedule. Initially, the unit was to begin filming by July-end. The source added, “It will now begin only in the second week of August. Rajamouli plans to film key sequences across the Serengeti, a protected region known for its wildlife. A team of 200 will shoot in Tanzania over five weeks, kicking off work with an action piece.”
