<p>Renowned writer, columnist, humourist and playwright Taarak Mehta has passed away at the age of 87 after prolonged illness.</p>
<p>Taarak Mehta breathed his last in Ahmedabad, Gujarat today (Wednesday, March 1), his family confirmed. They also intend to donate Taarak Mehta's body to science.</p>
<p>A relative of the writer, Atul Bhatt said, "He died of old age." Atul Bhatt is a doctor.</p>

<p>Taarak Mehta is best known for his Gujarati column 'Duniya Ne Undha Chasma'. The popular TV show 'Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah' is based on this column.</p>

<p>His humourous column first appeared in Chitralekha in March 1971.&nbsp;Taarak Mehta has also written six popular Gujarati plays.</p>
<p>He was awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award, in 2015.</p>

<p>Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani, among others, took to Twitter to pay tribute to&nbsp;Taarak Mehta.</p>
