Ali Fazal may have shot for Raakh only this year, but collaborating with director Prosit Roy has been his years-long desire. Seven years, to be precise. The actor remembers being blown away by Roy’s Pari (2018), which starred Anushka Sharma. Right then, Fazal knew that he wanted to be part of the director’s world at some point.

“I remember being struck by how Prosit built an entire world through mood, silence, and tension in Pari. It was an unusual horror film, away from the standard tropes used to scare,” says the actor. “Later, Paatal Lok [2020] reaffirmed my belief that he is one of the most exciting voices in our industry today. When Raakh came my way and I learned Prosit was at the helm, it felt like the universe was finally answering a quiet wish I’d been carrying for years. Sometimes, dreams take time to manifest, but when they do, they’re worth the wait.”

The Prime Video series, also starring Sonali Bendre, also marks his first role as a police officer. Mention that, and Fazal insists he is “not yet another cop” in the world of Hindi shows that is overpopulated with stereotyped police officers with troubled pasts. He notes that through his character, Raakh examines morality, duty, and human behaviour. “To explore this character under Prosit’s direction has been transformative. It helped having a director who pays attention to detail, pushes you without making you feel out of place, and creates [a distinct] world for his stories.”
