Anupam Roy: Crafted the number with a dark and gritty undertone

National Film Award recipient Anupam Roy considers the “groove” of the Bob Biswas soundtrack its unique selling point. “Not many songs have released in this [flavour],” says the composer of the Abhishek Bachchan starrer, a spin-off of the 2012 offering, Kahaani. “The brief given to me was that this is a revenge track. [The protagonist] has suffered a lot; he wants to get back at those [who’ve hurt him]. We roped in Siddharth Kaushal. He came up with the words, ‘Mujhe mujhse kaun bachaiga, tere bin’. So, it is a [revenge track], but also has a love angle. I crafted the number with a dark and gritty [undertone],” says the musician of the song that was rendered by KK.

Roy shares composing credits with Vishal-Sheykhar. He admits that while the quality remains unaffected, he finds himself more “invested” in projects that seek his involvement in entirety. “When you compose one song, the investment is a bit skewed. For instance, with Piku, for which I handled the score and songs, I had an idea of the story and how my work would be [showcased] in it. I was hence, deeply connected with the film. Building that connect is crucial, and that comes about when you get to handle the entire album.”

In the past year that the pandemic shifted focus from film music to independent songs, Roy has enjoyed consuming the works of artistes across India. He likes to pay attention to the developments in the music scene in Kerala, and Arunachal Pradesh, or indulge in the works of artistes of Malayali music, or those from Shillong. “Various parts of the country produce different kinds of music, and that inspires me. I try to understand and appreciate the varied sensibilities.”
