In the series directed by Rohan Sippy and led by Konkona Sensharma, Shraddha Das plays what she calls her “best role so far,” praising its layered writing and powerful character arc. The actress shared that her approach to work has matured over time
Shraddha Das
Shraddha Das has long been celebrated as a multi-faceted performer who has gracefully balanced her work across Bollywood, OTT, and South cinema. From glamorous roles to grounded performances, she has carved her own space in an industry known for its fickle nature. In an exclusive chat, the actress opened up about her latest project, Search, her evolving approach to work, and how the OTT revolution has liberated her as an artist.
On working with Konkona Sensharma in Search
Talking about how she landed her role in Search, Shraddha recalls, “This role came to me through a casting director who suddenly called and told me about a series being helmed by Konkona Sensharma, directed by Rohan Sippy, and produced by Applause for Hotstar. It was a big yes for me even before I auditioned. The project had everything going for it, a layered role, a strong character, an incredible team, and a great platform. The day after my audition, I got selected. I can honestly say this is the best role I’ve done in my career so far, across 35 to 40 films and projects.”
Over the years, Shraddha admits her choices as an actor have evolved drastically. “Earlier in my career, I would take up roles half-heartedly. Sometimes, I’d say yes even when I wasn’t happy with the character’s arc. But now, I look at the bigger picture, who the director is, who’s producing it, and most importantly, what my character brings to the story. I always ask myself, if this character were removed, would the story change? That question helps me decide. The length doesn’t matter; the impact does.”
Shraddha Das talks about creative freedom on OTT
Discussing the creative freedom that OTT has brought her, Shraddha explains, “In the South, I’ve often had a glamorous image, but OTT has allowed me to break free from that. Here, people are willing to take risks, to trust you with roles that challenge your comfort zone. You can play characters with grey shades or even negative traits without worrying about your ‘image’. The audience today loves real, flawed, and complex characters, and that’s so liberating as an actor.”
She adds that the digital medium has also helped dismantle long-held stereotypes about women in entertainment. “There’s no age barrier on OTT. You see actresses leading shows even after having children. Those old clichés about how a woman should look or behave on screen are being shattered. It’s such an empowering time to be a performer.”
For Shraddha, the transition from glamorous roles to performance-driven characters has been a rewarding one. “Look at Bhumi Pednekar or Nimrat Kaur — they’ve done bold, unconventional roles and gained more respect for their craft. It’s not about being typecast anymore. In fact, doing strong, layered roles makes people trust you even more as an actor.”
With Search, Shraddha Das reaffirms that her artistic journey is no longer about fitting into an image, it’s about truth, emotion, and impact. “Now when I come back home after a day of shooting, I feel fulfilled. I feel like I’ve done something that matters.”
