Controversy in Mahabharat escalated when viewers spotted a glaring error in one scene: a modern bedside table with drawers placed in ancient Hastinapur, alongside Goddess Ganga and baby Devvrat (Bheeshma). This anachronistic piece of furniture, which appeared briefly, quickly went viral online and became a subject of memes and mockery

A fresh rendition of the epic Mahabharata is currently available on OTT. Mahabharat - Ek Dharmayudh was generated using artificial intelligence and features no actors, sets, or physical presence. The contentious show has been chastised for 'normalising' the use of AI in production at a time when most producers are battling to keep AI out of filmmaking. Now, critics of the show have identified a flaw in one of the scenes: the inclusion of modern-looking furniture in old Hastinapur.

The Collective Media Network built the AI Mahabharat, which is currently streaming on JioHotstar. The first episode, released on October 25, centered on the birth of Prince Devvrat (later known as Bheeshma) to Hastinapur's King Shantanu. In one image, Goddess Ganga is seen with a little infant in a palatial apartment. While the remainder of the room was period-accurate with an antique bed and curtains, a modern-looking bedside table with drawers ruined the look.

The table, which resembled something extremely 20th-century, was kept in the background of the scenario and appeared on screen for only a few seconds. However, it was enough to be screenshotted and shared on the internet for laughs. "Watching AI Mahabharata on Jio Hotstar... I'm dying at the bedside desk," one user remarked as they uploaded a screenshot on Twitter.

Netizens react to the controversy

In response, one social media user joked, "Just missing a wireless charger." Many others who viewed the presentation commented that the AI rendition did not feel very real, and that the show had a strange vibe. "My mum was watching it day before and I was beside she was saying" see so perfect they look "then I explained her that an AI mom, she got upset really (last generation to be innocent)," wrote one of them. A different individual commented, "In one scene, there is a picture (on the bed wall) of a person wearing suit."

All about the show

Mahabharat - Ek Dharmayudh is released in episodic installments, with a new episode available on JioHotstar every Friday. Vijay Subramaniam, founder and group CEO of Collective Artists Network, spoke about the show at its trailer launch last month, saying, "For many of us, the Mahabharat is more than just a story; it's the tales we grew up hearing from our parents and grandparents, stories that shaped our imagination and values. With AI Mahabharat, we may experience those timeless stories in an entirely new way, brought to life by the power of modern AI technology."
