Actor-singer-lyricist Shabareesh Varma, who’s dabbled in everything from chart-topping music to impactful performances, is now venturing into a new genre with Inspection Bungalow,  a Malayalam horror-comedy series that also doubles up as a murder investigation drama. “We’ve seen haunted houses and bungalows in films across the world for ages. Inspection Bungalow too revolves around a haunted bungalow, but it’s a mix of horror, comedy, and murder investigation — I think that’s rare,” says Shabareesh talking to mid-day ahead of the premiere of the show on ZEE5.

At the heart of the story lies a group of terrified policemen whose antics drive both the humour and the mystery. “The police station crisis and the transformation of the inspection bungalow into a police station make the plot fun and spooky. It’s a horror comedy and an investigation rolled into one,” he explains.

Series vs films: A different challenge

While he’s no stranger to film sets, Shabareesh admits that working on a web series came with a learning curve. “In films, I usually travel with the project from day one till the end — it helps me prepare and even write songs. But in series, due to tight schedules, we often start with heavier scenes on the first day. Luckily, our writer and director helped me get into character right away,” he shares.

On Malayalam cinema’s global reach

With Malayalam cinema drawing increasing national and international attention, Shabareesh feels the creative ecosystem is thriving. “Our industry has been experimental since the 1960s. Every generation of filmmakers has pushed boundaries in storytelling and technique. The growing appreciation from outside Kerala just motivates us to go bigger,” he says.

And while the buzz comes with high expectations, he insists it doesn’t add pressure. “Certain big projects might feel that way, but that’s common in any industry,” he adds.

Music, friendship and milestones

Though music remains an inseparable part of his journey, acting has always been his first love. “Music has been my companion from the beginning, but my heart was always set on acting,” he smiles.

When asked about dream collaborations, Shabareesh keeps it simple, “I enjoy working with my friends more than chasing big names. It keeps the process comfortable and fun.”

Looking back, he credits Neram and Premam for establishing his presence in the industry, while Kannur Squad and Turbo cemented his place. “Those films became turning points that helped me stay and grow,” he reflects.

As for what drives his choices now, it’s all about the character and the people. “The character’s importance in the story comes first. Then, it’s the team, the crew and the cast. Cinema itself is a challenge; it constantly demands learning and reinvention,” he concludes.
