Sushmita Sen says Aarya 3 creator Ram Madhvani extracts honest performances from actors by giving them creative freedom

It won’t be wrong to say that with Aarya, Sushmita Sen finally found a project that showcased her potential as an artiste. The credit goes to Ram Madhvani’s vision for the crime drama, the first season of which received a Best Drama nomination at International Emmy Awards. But Sen says the creator-director’s bigger win lies in his ability to extract powerful performances from his actors by giving them complete freedom. “A director who gives liberty to his actors to play the field and run with their emotions gets the ‘real-est’ performance out of them,” she says.

As she gears up for the third season of the Disney+ Hotstar offering, Sen can see how collaborating with Madhvani has made her a finer actor. “When you’re performing a scene portraying loss, you’re expected to cry. But he doesn’t demand tears; he only asks you to immerse yourself in the moment. [While shooting this season], when I revisited the scene from the first season where Tej [Chandrachur Singh’s character] was shot, it sent shivers down my spine because I hadn’t realised I had the artistic space to perform in such a way.” The crime drama, an adaptation of Dutch show Penoza, also stars Sikandar Kher.
