The Max Mueller Bhavan Mumbai is currently showcasing a selection of works by German artist, Rosemarie Trockel, as part of a new solo show, titled Rosemarie Trockel: Selected drawings, objects and video works.

Trockel and her works are known for their cryptic stance against the traditional notions of painting, feminine roles in society, and culture at large. One look at her works and it&rsquo;s possible to gauge the absence of any coherence in terms of execution or methods used &mdash; perhaps, done willfully so as to generate a wide range of emotional responses among onlookers; another important aspect of her works. For example, Siesta a monochrome paintings done on paper using acrylic and pencil echoes the absurd relationship between a gun and its owner.

A major subject of Trockel&rsquo;s work has also been challenging the existing notions of art making. One of her most popular works in the topic is the installation Painting Machine (1990), which is also part of the exhibit. This open framework of iron uses materials like brushes and threads to create a painting machine that challenges the handcrafted-mechanical nature of art created by women as well as the mechanical nature of art making at that time.
Brought to India by the Institut for Auslands-beziehungen (IFA), this is the first time that Torckel&rsquo;s works, are on display in the city. Till: January 31, 11 am to 7 pm At: Gallery MMB, Max Mueller Bhavan, K Dubash Marg, Kala Ghoda. Call: 22027710
