Marina the mermaid lives in the ocean with her father and the lord of the seas, King Neptune. She has friends to keep her company in the waters, but her deepest desire is to get out of the ocean and see what the world outside is like. One day, she defies her father and swims up, only to fall in love with a prince. That's when trouble ensues.
Sounds familiar? While the names have been changed, this is, in fact, the story of the fairytale The Little Mermaid by the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen. This weekend, you can catch a musical retelling of the classic.

The stage production is backed by Vishaal Asrani's Institute of Performing Arts, and is directed by founder Asrani and a teacher at the institute, Jiji Subi. "While the show largely sticks to the original, we have tweaked the plot to offer an element of surprise. Since most of our audience comprises children, we have to see to it that the message is not too preachy, yet, ensure that they take something back with them," says Subi.

He adds that the cast comprises a mix of students from the institute and professional actors. "We have done a double casting in the case of the kids, just in case anyone falls ill or can't make it at the last minute for any other reason." So, the role of Marina will be essayed by two students, Maahi Shah and Tanisha Shroff, while the evil witch Esmeralda will be played by Neelima Mehra.
A lot of thought has gone into the one-and-a-half-hour production.
The musical score has been sourced from the Pioneer Drama School in the US. A Bangkok-based designer was roped in to create the vibrant costumes. "We have to make sure the costumes and sets are eye-catching, because they play a large part in bringing the magic alive on stage," adds Subi.
