The Nobel Prize 2025 has been awarded to Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi for their discoveries concerning peripheral immune tolerance. Their discoveries have explained how the body’s immune system is kept in check to prevent it from attacking its own organs. It has laid the foundation for a new field of research and spurred the development of new treatments.

Mary E. Brunkow (born 1961) is an American molecular biologist and immunologist. She earned her PhD from Princeton University, USA. She currently serves as a Senior Program Manager at the Univerity for Systems Biology in Seattle.

Fred Ramsdell (born 1960) is an American immunologist. He recieved his PhD from the University of California, USA.

Shimon Sakaguchi (born 1951) obtained his M.D. in 1976 and Ph.D. in 1983 from Kyoto University, Japan. He is a distinguished professor at the Immunology Frontier Research Center, Osaka University.

Their work on peripheral immune tolerance revealed how a special class of immune cells, known as regulatory T cells, act as guardians against autoimmune disease.

The award ceremony will be held December 10, the anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel, who founded the prizes. Nobel was a wealthy Swedish industrialist and the inventor of dynamite. He died in 1896.
