Old coins were discovered during excavation for the construction of a dharmshala and library in Gharuan village in Punjab's Mohali, officials said on Wednesday, prompting authorities to deploy police after locals gathered at the site in search of the coins.

The discovery came to light on Tuesday evening, after which a large number of locals, including women and children, reached the site and began searching the dug-up earth, some using torch lights, officials said.
