Set in the vibrant city of Delhi, Chehal Pehal is a play by Vikash Khurana that has been adapted from William Shakespeare's iconic play Much Ado About Nothing. The plot and characters portray a time of resurgent national pride that arose post the state of Emergency that lasted from 1975 to 1977.
Western choices and ideas had started seeping into the mindset of the average Indian. Rants of rising prices ruled everyday banter, and polka-dotted dresses and tailor-made bell-bottoms ruled the fashion scene.
In this typical 1970s setting, Kamal and Harini instantly fall in love. They pledge their love to one another and their marriage is agreed upon. Harini's sister Bulbul, meanwhile, loves engaging in a war of witty insults with Kamal's friend Bansi.

Their friends and family, however, believe that they are destined to be together, so they conspire to make them fall in love with each other. While all this is happening, Jagdish, a cousin, contrives a malicious plot to disrupt every one's happiness and keep them apart.
Explaining the validity and timelessness of Shakespeare's works, playwright Onkar Ghare shares, "I've always been a fan of Shakespeare's works. The plot and relationships of the characters are similar to modern-day relationships." From being the residents of an idyllic Italian town to that of politically charged city of Delhi, the characters are different yet portray the universal nature of love and life, he reveals.
The Stagecraft team, which has produced Chehal Pehal, will stage two other plays - The Marvellous Misadventures of Manohar Mama, which is a children's detective play, and A Shot in the Dark, a saucy murder mystery, over the weekend.
