This is what Darren Jacobson, Vice President, Instructor Training of Miami-based Zumba Fitness LLC, had to say while in the city on his maiden India visit, a few days back. Ruchika Kher caught up with him to figure the A-Z of this fitness routine that has taken the country by storm and why is India a hot market
What brings you to India?
India is a key focus for Zumba. We believe in the power of community and the ability to create social entrepreneurs. Our model allows the instructors to be in control of their time, earnings and businesses and we feel that the combination of passion, love for dance and a fierce focus on community in the country, makes it a great market for us to spread the Zumba love and passion.

Zumba has become quite a rage in India. What do you think made it click?
The simplicity of the movements and the easy-to-follow formula were the key factors. The love for movement, music and dance and the ability to break into a new career in fitness that is easily accessible also contributed to the trend. The great Latin rhythms of Zumba and the amazing energy that our first groups of instructors have spread across the country helped as well. Zumba talks about that moment when you get lost in the music and forget that you are actually exercising and doing something great for your body and mind. Zumba is exercise in disguise.

What is your expansion plans for India?
We have set up a system of marketing agents in key cities to help grow our exposure and to create the training opportunities for new instructors.

What are the core benefits of this routine and why should one opt for it?
It’s a total body workout where each participant can lose between 500-800 calories per hour. It is based on intermittent training hence increasing the strength and endurance of your heart and muscles at the same time. Various formats like Aqua, Step, Toning and Sentao of Zumba focus on different target areas of your body.
