The two-hour interactive session will enable the audience to experience a live demonstration of different Hindustani music styles like Draupad, Khayal, Thumri, Ghazal, and Geet bhajan. In-depth insights will also be given on the different styles and gharanas of Indian classical music, and works of various maestros will be discussed. What does Pandit Shashwat hope to leave the audience with at the end of the session? &ldquo;Through this workshop, I will take the audience into the realms of Indian classical music. They will have an opportunity to experience and learn various vocal techniques, and they will leave with the ability to understand and truly appreciate Indian classical singing. The workshop is designed in such a way so as to give even a lay person a fair idea and understanding of Indian classical music.&rdquo; Panditji, who is also the music advisor to the British Education Authority, is saddened by the lack of knowledge we have about our own musical heritage. Citing the example of his long stay in the United Kingdom from 1984 to 2009, he says, &ldquo;I noticed that even a lay person there would be able to tell you the difference between the violin and the viola. But in India, you ask a person the difference between sarangi and surbahar, and chances are that he/ she will have no idea.&rdquo; He adds, &ldquo;Indians have long taken their rich musical legacy for granted.
