City historian Rafique Baghdadi informed that us being a mill hub, the area was inhabited by workers who had migrated to Mumbai from Konkan and other hinterlands across Maharashtra. People from this community would mainly eat Pohe or Chiwda for breakfast and snack the same in the evenings, which gave rise to Chiwda Galli.
Adjoining this lane, you will find Masala Galli, which has rows of shops lined with glass bottles of masalas; in the past several Maharashtrian families would sell home-made masalas, which gave rise to this lane’s name. One of the oldest chiwda shops in the lane is Vijaylakshmi Chiwda, which has been in the business for nearly 36 years.
