Check out some rare paintings from the late Damodar Warrior's much-admired Bhagawati series

Acclaimed artist Damodar Warrior's first solo exhibition was organised in 1949 at the Artists Centre by none other than author Dr Mulk Raj Anand, who appreciated Warrior's work for its content and style.

The paintings were made in a neo-realistic style based on the Mexican painter Diego Rivera's paintings of which Warrior was an admirer. His last exhibition Agnihotram was held in Mumbai in 2009.

Nandita Khaire, daughter of the artist and organiser of the event, said that the paintings on display are some of the rarest paintings by her father. The inspiration behind the artworks came from Goddess Bhagavati and the beauty of Kerala's culture.

Khaire pointed that we selected to exhibit the paintings in Pune as it is no more a small town and people here are interested in different art forms.u00a0 Damodar Warrior was renowned for experimenting with his art.

While talking about her personal experience with her father, Khaire said, "He was an extremely creative artist and his style of painting was different from others. He used to be very possessive about his paintings and worked hard on them."
