Just when we thought that there was no more space for an eatery in the lane off Carter Road, Guilt Trip opens shop.

Guilt trip

This dessert stopover lives up to its name; we spotted joggers drop by to check out the attractive-looking store, only to avoid temptation, what New Year’s Eve closing in. The store has a few stools, and can be a cosy place to chill with friends, as it is the quieter end of this buzzing stretch. The walls are lined with neat, labelled racks so you can browse to choose your option of guilt.

We chose the Pinacolada Punch Cupcake (Rs 80) with a straw in the middle, making it look fun. The base cake had coconut bits thrown in, but the pineapple flavour wasn’t generous, making it taste very dense. Next, we tried the Peanut Butter (Rs 70) option, which, surprisingly, had a blueberry filling in the middle giving it a very sweet taste; ideally, it should’ve been a balance between sweet and salty (the icing won the test).

Feeling guilty by now, we headed towards the pastry section, which was better. We ordered the Blueberry Cheesecake (Rs 100) and Red Velvet (Rs 110) option. The cheesecake was light with a delicious blueberry sauce on top. The Red Velvet was perfectly moist, and Guilt Trip added a surprise tang to it with a fresh lemony icing. From the mini cupcake section, we tried Death by Chocolate (Rs 20), which to our relief, was gooey and light, as a cupcake should be.

Guilt Trip should work on good bases for their cupcakes rather than on fancy-looking icing (which tasted yum), and focus on being a pastry hub in a lane with four yoghurt parlours.
