It&rsquo;s that time of the year when there are rehearsals for parades and the city is gripped with patriotic fervour. You can also head to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) at 8 am or to the University of Pune building. Splurge on colourful national flags that are being sold across the city. Some of the best places for such buys are the Maheshwari Khadi Bhandar, near Pasodya Vithoba and at Murudkar Zendewale, Moti Chowk. Flags are available in various sizes, from the smaller 4 inches x 6 inches to large ones that are 6 feet x 9 feet. To honour the contribution of the jawans this Republic Day, do a good turn. One could take part in activities like spending a day with an NGO or in a day-care home or distribute food and other necessary stuff to street children. Or, you could begin with telling the history of the country and our struggle for Independence to your children. One can also visit senior citizen jawans or ex-army officers and listen to their fond memories. One of the most significant parts of the Republic Day celebrations is the disposal of the tri-colour flag post celebrations, from the streets, stations, beaches and garbage bins. We suggest you gather children from your vicinity and ask them to collect the flags strewn on the streets and donate it to some NGO or the PMC. Suresh Jagtap, Solid Waste Management Head, PMC, said, &ldquo;If waste pickers find the flags on streets or dustbins, they segregate it from the garbage so that there is no disrespect shown towards the flag. These flags are then stored in a safe place.&rdquo;u00a0
