Twenty-two years after successfully overcoming breast cancer, a 52-year-old woman believed the disease was firmly behind her. An avid trekker and mountaineer, she had returned to a full and active life after undergoing breast-conserving surgery, chemotherapy and radiation in her early thirties. For more than two decades, her follow-up visits remained uneventful, and she enjoyed an excellent quality of life.

Then she noticed a small lump in the same breast. Like many long-term cancer survivors, she never imagined it could be cancer again. However, a biopsy revealed something unexpected. It was not simply a recurrence of her earlier disease—it was a new breast cancer, arising in a different part of the breast with different biological characteristics.
