The only thing you need to keep in mind before you order is that 'patience' is indeed a virtue u00a0 It was almost 10 pm when we called to place the order at Singh's Kitchen. No, Singh didn't take our order, neither did the 'nani' whose hands the flyer promised would be lovingly engaged in the rolling of the parathas "made in whole wheat and Amul Butter" that we chose to order that damp night. <img alt="" src="/imagedata/2011/aug/pulao.jpg" border="5" /> Hyderabadi Veg Biryani We were informed that we would have to wait 40 minutes for the order of Hyderabadi Veg Biryani (Rs 65 for half-plate), Dahi Veg Pakora Curry (Rs 60 for half-plate), Aloo Methi (Rs 60 for half-plate) and a Gobi Paratha (Rs 65) to arrive. We weren't complaining; until the clock struck 11 pm. Then 11.15 pm. The order, like the nani, was absconding. Several frantic calls later, the reassuring ring of the doorbell guaranteed that we would not go hungry that night. The food was thankfully still hot, as greedy hands peeled off foil and cardboard covers to reveal our dinner. The Gobi Paratha was bursting with stuffing, as well as spice. The red chilli powder, red chillis and green chillis did indeed remind us of our nani, but this time the memory was far from pleasant. The parathas are served with yoghurt, pickle and chhole, which turned out to be buttery kidney beans or Rajma instead: a salty but delicious accompaniment to the meal. The Hyderabadi Veg Biryani was not as nice: the rice, carrots, beans and peas, along with the odd piece of paneer had been smothered with a green masala paste that did little to elevate the dish. Next, we tried the Methi Aloo. The bitterness of the fenugreek leaves, the tang of the tomatoes and the bland boiled potatoes worked together perfectly. Full marks! The Veg Dahi Pakora Curry was good too. Onion pakodas peeked out of a yoghurt-based gravy that had been delicately spiked with the flavour of methi (fenugreek) seeds that offset the saltiness of the curry. Perfect with a bowl of boiled rice. Singh's Kitchen also serves non-vegetarian food, including parathas stuffed with kheema (mutton mince) and Butter Chicken. There's even a small section devoted to 'Chinese' and dishes from the Konkan. If you're having a party, you could buy food by the kilo, which they claim gets you more "for lesses". The food here is wholesome, 'homely' even, just make sure to place your order well in advance, so that you don't have to contend with twiddling thumbs and growling stomachs at the dinner table. u00a0 At Singh's Kitchen, 501, Kudrat building, 15th Road, Khar (W).
