Birthday love

The fans brought the noise, the paps brought the cakes, and Ranbir Kapoor brought the heart sign. Stepping out onto his Bandra balcony, the birthday boy gave the crowd exactly what they came for on Monday.

Social hopscotch

Mumbai hasn’t earned the moniker ‘the city that never sleeps’ for no reason, and Saturday delivered serious receipts.
The evening kicked off in BKC with a soiree hosted by the Australian Macadamia Society — and yes, things got deliciously nuts as the night progressed. A stone’s throw away, Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal turned heads before an august audience at a fashion presentation, while a mid-town awards ceremony and dinner with top chef Mitsuharu ‘Micha’ Tsumura kept the glitterati moving. Still, leave it to the culinary circuit to steal the spotlight: Masque celebrated 10 delicious years, and given the decade they’ve had, the anniversary blowout naturally pulled out every stop imaginable (more on that follows).

Across town, in Juhu, Malaika and Zayed Khan hosted a birthday bash for Lucky Morani — complete with Mika Singh belting out ‘Happy Birthday’ at full tilt (which is, of course, its own kind of epic).
Naturally, the social stamina on display was off the charts. Rashmi Uday Singh clocked a staggering four events, while restaurateurs AD Singh and Rahul Akerkar ticked off at least two. Farzana Contractor, however, was having none of the marathon hustle, making it clear that one-and-done remains her golden rule: “Behram and I always committed to only one event a night. I think it is disrespectful to party hop.”
To each their own brand of weekend decadence, we say — whether you’re playing social hopscotch across town or sipping champagne strictly in one spot.

Perfect ten

That Mumbai’s top-rated restaurant — and the visionary team behind it — is beloved by the city’s swish set was thoroughly evidenced on Saturday as Aditi and Aditya Dugar hosted a landmark tenth-anniversary celebration for Masque. The evening began intimately at the restaurant itself but the festivities soon spilled over just a stone’s throw away to the Four Seasons, to make room for a massive, high-wattage guest list.
The industry’s camaraderie was palpable, with a rare concentration of hospitality royalty mingling in one room: AD Singh, Rahul Akerkar, Sameer Seth and Yash Bhanage, Rishi Acharya, Gaurav Batra, Gauri Devidayal, and Masque’s own culinary torchbearer, Varun Totlani (and this list is far from exhaustive).
Harsh Goenka dropped by after an exquisite sampling of Maido marvels courtesy Chef Micha at The St Regis — a dinner he praised as inventive and impressive in equal measure. Harsh Mariwala made a rare appearance, while Vikas and Gayatri Oberoi, Amrita and Rahul Raichand, Chirag and Tanaaz Doshi, Ashish Goel, and Mallika Sagar were also seen raising a glass.
Beyond the sparkling company, the pathbreaking team had boundless reason to celebrate. Over the past decade, Masque has transformed from an audacious, foraging-first experiment in an old Mumbai mill into an international powerhouse — routinely cementing its place on the world stage and dominating Asia’s 50 Best lists. Yet, as the room buzzed late into the night, the spotlight lingered on more than just trophies and accolades; it was a tribute to a decade of creative risks, resilient friendships, and an extraordinary journey that has fundamentally redefined modern Indian fine dining.

The Maestro’s 80th chapter

New Delhi held a special place in Bishan Singh Bedi’s heart — it was his longtime home base, the anchor to a storied life, and fittingly, the stage chosen to unveil a tribute to the spin maestro on September 25, marking what would have been his 80th birthday.
Lovingly curated by his wife, Anju Bedi, Bishan with Love brings together an evocative collection of articles celebrating the legendary cricketer’s indelible impact on and off the pitch. While Delhi had the first toast, the affable Mrs Bedi tells yours truly that she hopes to bring the celebration to Mumbai next with another dedicated launch, just around the time copies officially hit bookshelves in mid-October.
The capital’s evening crackled with vintage charm, bringing together a cross-section of political stalwarts, cultural icons, and cricketing stars. Farooq Abdullah and son Omar attended alongside chief guests Captain Amarinder Singh and Kapil Dev. The room hummed with warmth — Sharmila Tagore arrived early, mingling amidst a distinguished crowd that included industrialist Arun Bharat Ram, legal luminary Lalit Bhasin, and Bedi’s former teammates Madan Lal and Syed Kirmani.
Naturally, the banter ran high. Moderator Rajdeep Sardesai nudged Captain Amarinder Singh about why Indian stadiums so rarely bear the names of cricketing icons, lobbying for the Chandigarh stadium to be christened after Kapil Dev. But Kapil, embodying typical grace, diffused the room into appreciative chuckles with a disarmingly calm reply, “Naam dil mein rahe kaafi hai, plaque par nahin.”
It was a sentiment Bishan Paaji, who played with his heart firmly on his sleeve, would have heartily approved.
