Company of greatness

Stepping out of a gym in Khar on Tuesday, Suryakumar Yadav paused only to put his wristwork to a different kind of test — signing a fan’s bat already graced by Sachin Tendulkar’s autograph.

Bandra’s secret pup posse

Move over glamorous red carpets and shared fitness circles — there is a far sweeter, wonderfully unexpected bond tying together neighbours Sophie Choudry and Malaika Arora. Tucked away in their chic Bandra apartment complex lives a four-legged secret that hardly anyone knows about: a rescue indie named Coco, whom the two glamorous divas co-parent with equal devotion.

The heartwarming arrangement began quietly during the 2020 lockdown. “Coco is an indie I found during Covid,” Sophie tells yours truly. “Malaika, myself, and another neighbour co-adopted her.”
While Malaika dotes on her fluffy pooch Casper and Sophie has her nearly decade-long shadow, Tia, street-smart Coco rules the building roost with all the perks of celebrity adoption. Forget roughing it —Coco visits the exact same swanky vet as Tia, and enjoys the identical roster of gourmet goodies and pampering.

Between juggling film sets, Pilates sessions, and jet-setting escapes — Sophie is currently in Austria on a wellness detox at Vivamayr — the neighbouring trio ensures Coco never lacks for love or five-star care. It also makes for a tight-knit canine crew; while Sophie’s beloved Tia famously snubs other four-legged peers (“she’s far more into humans”), Malaika’s Casper is one of the rare exceptions granted an audience. It takes a village to raise a pup, but in this corner of suburban Mumbai, it takes a posse of glamorous animal lovers turning rescue into royalty.

Into the blue

She may be a quintessential 90s screen icon and a celebrated culinary force, but Maria Goretti’s real element has always been nature in its true form.
Catching up with yours truly fresh off her annual oceanic pilgrimage, her sun-drenched glow is positively radiant. For well over a decade, diving has been an intimate family ritual shared with her children, Zeke and Zene — her beloved ‘ZZs’ — both divers in their own right. And while their logbooks boast reefs from Thailand to the Andamans, Maria insists nothing holds a candle to the turquoise expanses of the Maldives.

Just last month, the trio dropped anchor on a secluded local atoll for 10 blissful days of barefoot abandon. In signature Maria fashion, shoes remained buried deep in her luggage until the journey home — days were measured only by salt spray, spectacular island spreads, and sun-drenched banter.
Maria admits that returning to the deep after a year away always requires time to recalibrate. But once her fins take over, that familiar underwater grace returns — sometimes sitting on the sea-bed watching manta rays or finning with sea turtles and chancing upon graceful leopard sharks.

Yet returning year after year also brings a bittersweet awareness. “The children and I have watched the reefs shift under the relentless weight of warming waters — it is a tangible, heartbreaking transformation,” she shares with quiet poignancy. Still, seeing the next generation navigate the blue with equal parts awe and protective reverence, one thing remains unmistakably clear: for Maria and her kids, the tide will always call them home.

Showers of blessings

Elsewhere in Bandra, the Panday household is riding a wave of pure celebration, and social media is getting front-row seats to every sweet moment. On Tuesday, Ananya Panday practically broke the internet in the best way possible: dressed down in an Iron Maiden tee, completely smitten as she bonded with cousin Alanna’s little boy, River. Between flipping through a game book, she managed to coax out a triumphant high five, followed by an adorable kiss that melted everyone’s feeds.

The festivities, however, are only getting started. Later this week, the family gathers for another milestone: a baby shower for Alanna and her husband Ivor McCray, who are now expecting a baby girl. Future grandparents Deanne and Chikki are visibly walking on air, and the anticipation is running sky-high.
If you aren’t among the 2.4 million people already tracking Alanna’s curated life on Instagram, prepare for visual opulence. We’re talking breathtaking, Pinterest-worthy decor, tables overflowing with gourmet goodies, and lush floral arrangements grand enough to rival a high-end wedding. True to form, Alanna and Ivor do nothing by half measures — and this pretty-in-pink celebration is shaping up to be an absolute dream. Stay tuned for more.
