<h2>Back In The Game</h2>
You can take the man out of cricket, but you can&rsquo;t take cricket out of the man. Last week, former IPL boss Lalit Modi found himself in Muscat, where the wedding celebrations of Kairavi Khimji and Aryaman Thakker included a cricket match for guests. On Modi&rsquo;s team were Raj Salgaocar, Gautam Singhania (perhaps more naturally suited to speed than cricket), and UPL chairman Jai Shroff.

By his own admission, Modi hasn&rsquo;t played the game in 47 years. But some habits die hard, especially for a man whose name is so closely entwined with the sport. And so, after nearly five decades away from the pitch, Lalit was back in the game &mdash; albeit at a very private wedding match rather than in an internationally televised league fixture.
<h2>Mubarak Ho!</h2>
Before the gilded grandeur of Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla&rsquo;s Mubarak Baug came into view on Sunday night, a &lsquo;barati&rsquo; band had already set the tempo for their 40th anniversary celebrations. They welcomed guests with precisely the kind of fanfare the evening demanded &mdash; because if there was ever a day to dress as though you were attending your own wedding, this was it. The dress code was, after all, &lsquo;maximal,&rsquo; and the room duly delivered: glittering, gilded, and gloriously overdressed.

Among the many who arrived in Abu-Sandeep were Ambani bahus Shloka and Radhika, Sonam Kapoor, and sari-clad beauties Pinky Reddy and Madhoo Shah. In a sea of gold, Nita Ambani made her own dramatic entrance in red AJSK, while taking a moment to speak about her 38-year relationship with the designers &mdash; one that began, as she put it, &ldquo;in a little garage in Juhu.&rdquo; It was a fitting reminder that behind the glamour of the evening was something considerably more enduring: four decades of building a fashion house, and the friendships that have grown alongside it.

The night was, in many ways, a roll call of those friendships. Asha Parekh, whom the boys have adored since their youth, arrived in a glorious AJSK sari, with Sandeep himself escorting the veteran star into his new store. Navya Naveli Nanda represented the Bachchan family, another longstanding relationship, with mother Shweta Bachchan apparently away on a cruise. And then there was Dimple Kapadia, their enduring muse, radiant as ever and seated beside Abu, surveying the evening with the easy familiarity of someone who has been part of the story for decades.

Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal missed the night&rsquo;s fashion presentation, having rushed to Dhobi Talao after watching a public show of Mirzapur in Bandra. They may have arrived in jeans on this particular evening, but both wore AJSK for their wedding &mdash; proof that some relationships, even in fashion, go well beyond one&rsquo;s wardrobe.

Tanya Dubash, Ami Patel, Meena Raheja, Suchitra Pillai, Supriya Mody, and Neetu Singh were but a handful from the evening&rsquo;s long list of notables. But perhaps the most poignant tribute to four decades of fashion was the gathering of nearly 50 mega-models, spanning generations: Nayanika Chatterjee, Madhu Sapre, Gautam Kapur, Bikram Saluja, Kelly Dorji (who flew in from Bhutan especially for the occasion), and Anna Bredemeyer, who, fittingly, also walked for their debut show.
Forty years on, Abu and Sandeep have built much more than a signature aesthetic. They have built an archive of people, memories and loyalties &mdash; a fashion family that, on this night, arrived dressed to celebrate its own.
<h2>Masterpiece Moves</h2>
While Abu and Sandeep were blowing their trumpets &mdash; literally, rather than metaphorically &mdash; deep in the heart of South Mumbai, cultural entrepreneur Sangita Kathiwada was orchestrating a rather more rarefied affair in Worli. Sunday evening saw the launch of Tushar Jiwarajka&rsquo;s Volte Una, a new auction platform for Indian masterpieces, at Kathiwada City House.

The guest list was suitably eclectic: artists Raghava KK and Maximiliano Modesti (whose Kalhath Foundation is currently represented at Homo Faber in Venice), philanthropist Reita Gadkari, high-jewellery designers Avinash Kothari and son Karan, politico Annu Tandon, and Narendra Kumar Ahmed.

Inside, the walls did much of the talking, with works by Tyeb Mehta, Jamini Roy, and S H Raza holding court. Madhuri Dixit circulated through the room, adding her own particular luminosity. Fittingly, it is a world she knows well: immortalised by MF Husain, she remains both muse and enduring presence in the Indian art conversation.
