Your time stops, now...! Varkala beach, Kerala Driving down the Kerala coastline is a treat for the senses -- sandy beaches, salty air, coconut palms waving out to you. The Varkala beach is a short autorichskaw ride away from the sleepy town of Varkala (50 kms north of Trivandrum) and provides for gorgeous relief from the madness of Kovalam. <img alt="" src="/imagedata/2010/oct/beachg.jpg" border="5" /> The view of cliffs jutting out from the otherwise flat Kerala coast juxtaposed with that of the unending Arabian Sea is spectacular, especially when the sun dips into the waters and twilight takes over. The mineral springs that abound in this area are said to have curative properties and a dip in the holy waters of the beach is said to cleanse your body and soul. Radha nagar beach, Havelock island What's the best litmus test of a secluded beach? That people haven't heard about it. So if Radhanagar draws up a blank, you know it fits the bill. Havelock Island, a chain of islands to the east of the Great Andaman in the Andaman Islands, and situated 57 km north east of Port Blair, has Beach No 7 (Radha Nagar) that was named Best Beach in Asia by Time Magazine. This is one of the few beaches that has escaped from the clutches of mass tourism and commercialisation. Verdant, silky white sands backed by a forest that provides shade from the sweltering sun and looking over turquoise waters laden with coral reefs make for an experience not to be missed. A few shacks line the road hitting the beach. These can rent out snorkels and fins for you to explore the underwaters. The sunset, we here, can bring out the poet in you. Tarkarli, Maharashtra If you are looking for a quick getaway, drive down to Tarkarli, located 6 kms south of Malvan and 546 kms from Mumbai. A narrow stretch of beach with aquamarine waters located at the convergence of the Karli River and the Arabian Sea, you can see the seabed up to 20 feet on a fairly sunny day. Cruise ships often make a stopover here, so make sure you call up the MTDC Hotel here (bang on the beach) and ask for details of these ships beforehand. Sipping on a beer (or sol kadi) as you sit amidst the suru trees, looking out into the horizon --u00a0 exactly what a weekend retreat should be all about.
