In a departure from usual trails, enthusiasts can soak in the history and sights of one of Mumbai&rsquo;s oldest localities, Malabar Hill, this Sunday with the Malabar Hill Walk.

&ldquo;Most tourist destinations are in south Mumbai. Many local clients of our walks who had explored the Churchgate area, Bandra and other walks, were interested in covering Malabar Hill. That&rsquo;s why we decided to design a walk,&rdquo; shares Dhiraj Sanil, head of operations, Raconteur Walks Mumbai.

What makes this two-km tour interesting is the different aspects of religion, history and mythology. &ldquo;The area is home to some of the oldest derasars (Jain temples) in the city, it also includes the Banganga Tank where Lord Ram was said to have taken a break during his journey to Lanka. Malabar Hill also plays a part in the Independence movement as both the house of Jinnah, and Mani Bhavan are in this locality,&rdquo; adds Sanil.

File Pics Sanil tells us that till 1868, the whole city was housed in the Fort walls and people feared stepping out. It was Sir Bartle Frere who ventured out and thought of expanding the city. He even built his house there and was said to have paid several people, and promoted the area among the rich promising them good amenities. Before that, the locality was said to be overflowing with sewage, with wild animals roaming around. The team researched on the locality by studying old books and journals of the city. Sanil tells us that Malabar Hill was also known for an infamous murder case, which was said to have involved the Maharaja of Indore and had Jinnah as one of the lawyers too. The walk will also cover other popular spots such as the Babulnath temple, Walkeshwar temple and the Hanging Gardens.
