Learn the art of making adorable stuffed plushies using the Japanese craft form, Amigurumi at a Khar-based workshop

Here's a chance to let your creative juices flow, and also learn about a new craft form. The Japanese art of Amigurumi is a method of using crochet to create soft toys. Vile Parle-based organisation, Small World, is conducting an Amigurumi workshop for fans of knitting who are keen to learn the art of using crochet to create stuffed toys. It also makes for a suitable gift for your loved ones.
Saurav Arya, founder of the organisation, explains the concept of this Japanese art, and how it is different from crochet. He says, “Amigurumi is the Japanese art of knitting or crocheting small, stuffed yarn creatures — usually animals, dolls, or whimsical objects. Think of them as cute, squishy plushies made entirely from yarn. Amigurumi uses crochet, but it’s focused on creating 3D figures. While traditional crochet might be used for blankets or clothes, Amigurumi is all about sculpting adorable characters and objects with yarn, stuffing, and stitching.”

The process is simple, especially if you have experience in crochet. Arya shares, “It starts with learning a simple crochet stitch, then shaping it into parts — like a round head, tiny ears, or a tail. You stuff these with fibrefill, stitch them together, and add cute touches like eyes or embroidery. The result is a pocket-sized bundle of joy you made yourself.”
This workshop doesn’t require you to be a crocheting star. “Whether you’re a beginner, or have basic crochet skills, our workshop is beginner-friendly where participants get step-by-step guidance. You can learn the basics in one session. Mastery takes practice, but you’ll leave the workshop with a handmade plushie and the skills to keep creating on your own.”

Previous workshops received a positive response, “Guests loved how therapeutic and rewarding it felt. Many left with not just a plushie, but a new hobby. Some even gifted these to their partners or friends — handmade love at its best.”
