Hailing from the Langa community known for their valuable legacy of centuries’-old Rajasthani folk music, SAZ, an acronym for Sadiq, Asin and Zakir Khan are a trio of musicians and singers trained in dholak, Sindhi sarangi, and khartal, respectively. Having initially performed at the Jodhpur RIFF festival separately, the three joined hands to form a band with the aim to revive their traditional songs while making new ones and collaborating with other artistes.
“The first part of the performance is called Rang-e-Thar, and involves SAZ playing a set of old and new folk songs accompanied by beautiful musical instruments from the deserts of Rajasthan. Inayat, the second act, has Tarini Tripathi, a classical Kathak dancer whose graceful moves brings an elaborate amalgamation of music and dance, collaborating with SAZ. The third act presents Rhys Sebastian aka Saxontoast’s relaxed and sophisticated jazz seamlessly blending with SAZ’s music, leading towards an epic finale. The audience can expect some high-quality music, some great grooves to listen to and to move with,” shared Divya Bhatia, director and producer of the evening and Jodhpur RIFF.

Tripathi, who will be performing along with SAZ at the highly anticipated event, shared, “We collaborated two years ago to create an event to see how folk music and classical dance, especially Kathak, can interact and form something unique. It has been a great experience working with artistes from different backgrounds while sharing the trait of honouring our legacy and practicing the craft passed down by our families,” she signs off.
