A few days ago, pop star Justin Bieber made headlines for his interpretation of a popular menswear trend — he and his pooch both wore matching bright red Hawaiian shirts as they lounged at home. Although never truly out of style, Hawaiian shirts have been recently experiencing a surge in popularity, says lifestyle blogger Riaan George. He credits the trend with being summer-appropriate and refreshingly playful, especially given our extended home-bound routines and shares three easy ways of dressing them up.

Change the fit: A slimmer and smarter fit can immediately make the shirt look more put-together and appropriate for semi-formal events, George notes. Wear this with a pair of well-fitted trousers in a complementing colour. He notes that singer Harry Styles often follows this mantra when wearing loud tropical prints in bright colours.

Layer it: Tone down the intensity of the print by layering the shirt with a smart jacket. Choose a simpler pair of trousers or jeans. You could also wear the shirt as an outer layer, over a white or a black tee.

Play with contrasts: Pairing a Hawaiian shirt with printed bottoms is a risky move but, if done right, can win you major style points, says George. He suggests choosing similar colours for both sets of prints to keep your outfit from seeming too jarring.

Keep it classic: For a more vintage look, wear a slightly large fit over faded jeans and white trainers. Roll up the ends of your jeans and skip the socks.
