This new streetwear store houses 15 homegrown labels from across the country. We drop by for a vibe check

Here is a sneak-peek into this new streetwear store in Kala Ghoda

A section in the store is reserved for wallets and perfumes

The building that houses the iconic and charming Kala Ghoda Café on the ground floor, has a new Gen-Z occupant, courtesy a streetwear store Projekt Street. With the main hub of hip-hop fashion culture based in Bandra, this writer was curious to check out this new SoBo addition that had opened in November last year. We drop by on a weekday at noon, and notice the dramatic shift from the dimly-lit overall appearance with a prevalent brown theme on the first two floors, to a sudden pop of colour, light and energy on the third floor. Vibrant murals on either side of the staircase welcome us, while a gigantic mirror right opposite the elevator makes us halt for a quick mirror-selfie before we enter the store.

Soft music greets us and we are in awe of the aesthetically planned space. Protruding arches lined with golden lights divide the racks into sections that run along the walls of the store. The space boasts of apparel and accessories by 15 homegrown streetwear labels from across the country. Co-founders Yashovardhan Singh and Aditi Birla spot us skimming through the collection and approach immediately. They tell us about how the store is divided into sections for easy browsing. Each section represents a different style — luxury wear, upcycled clothes, exclusive collection, airport looks and more. When we ask if there are any international brands included, they refuse. “Our aim is to give a platform to homegrown labels only. We make sure to pick the best of them after thorough quality check because we only allow only one brand selling a specific style. We want to focus on their growth and not make them compete in the same store,” they explain.

As we check out the store’s wares, we realise that it is one of the few with an array of options for those with budgets, is size-inclusive and apart from the all-unisex apparel, typically available in other streetwear stores, they also have some styles catering to the feminine and masculine silhouettes separately. To phrase it like a Gen-Zer, the collection slaps.
