A woman and her eight-year-old son died of suspected poisoning in Bhayander town of <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-crime-news/article/maharashtra-three-child-labourers-rescued-from-metal-works-unit-3-held-23298071" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Maharashtra</a>'s Thane district, police said on Saturday, according to the PTI.
The incident took place in a housing society in Murde area of <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-crime-news/article/maharashtra-girl-four-women-rescued-from-flesh-trade-in-thane-two-held-23297517" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Thane</a> on Friday night, an official said.
The woman's husband came home at night and found the door locked from inside and there was no response despite repeated knocks, he said.
The man then broke down the door and found his wife Kavita Chavan, son Rohit and brother Shyam lying unconscious, the official said.
The trio were rushed to a hospital, where the child was declared brought dead, while Kavita died during treatment this morning and Shyam is recuperating, he said.
A case of accidental death has been registered, the official said, adding that the police have collected food samples from the house and sent them for analysis.
The police are probing to find out if this was a case of food poisoning or there is any other cause for the deaths.
Meanwhile, in an another incident, the police have rescued three minors who were allegedly working in a metal works unit in Maharashtra's Thane district and arrested as many people for employing child labourers, an official said on Saturday, according to the PTI.
The Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Amendment Act prohibits the employment of children below the age of 14 years in 18 occupations and 65 processes.
Senior inspector Samir Ahirrao of the anti-human trafficking cell of the Mira-Bhayandar, Vasai-Virar police, said the minors were rescued after a raid at the factory in Kashimira on the outskirts of Mumbai on Friday, reported the PTI.
When the police reached the unit, they found the children putting metal bars in acid before cutting them with an electric cutter and shifting the pieces with the help of cranes for loading, the official said.
Apart from rescuing the children, the police also arrested three company supervisors for asking the minors to do the hazardous work, he said.
A case has been registered against the arrested supervisors and two labour contractors under the Indian Penal Code, the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Amendment Act and the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, he said.
