The Andheri police have arrested two men in connection with a house break-in that occurred while a family was at the hospital for a childbirth. The suspects allegedly stole gold ornaments worth approximately R8 lakh from the residence.

The incident took place in Anand Nagar, Marol, Andheri East. Vinay Suresh Upadhyay, 32, the homeowner, said his pregnant sister, Simpi, had come to their father’s home for the delivery. On July 5, around 5 pm, Simpi began experiencing labour pains, prompting the family to rush her to the hospital. She delivered a baby boy later that night.

During their absence, the house was allegedly broken into, with the theft captured on the society’s CCTV cameras. When the family returned around 5 am on July 6, they discovered the lock on the main door broken and the gold jewellery missing from a locker. They immediately informed the Andheri police, who registered an FIR.

Speaking to mid-day, Vinay Upadhyay said, “We locked the house before leaving. When we returned in the morning, we saw the lock was broken. All our gold valuables were gone. The thieves had even locked our neighbours’ doors from the outside to avoid being noticed.”

He added, “We informed the police and other residents. We lost everything, my sister's wedding jewellery and the gold she received during her baby shower. It was all kept at home. We hope the police will recover our belongings.”

The police arrested Mohammad Ali Gulamnabi Shaikh, 52 and Akbar Ali Fateh Mohamad Sain, 31, both of whom are known repeat offenders. Investigators believe the duo locked the neighbouring homes from the outside to ensure no one would witness the burglary.

A police officer said, “We have arrested two suspects in the case and are working to recover the stolen gold. The accused are habitual offenders who ensured all adjacent houses were locked from the outside before committing the crime.” The investigation is ongoing.
