In a troubling series of incidents, residents of the upscale Hiranandani Gardens Society in Powai, Mumbai, have reported multiple attacks by pet dogs belonging to a resident, prompting police action into the case.

Despite at least three people being bitten, the dog owner allegedly failed to take any corrective measures. As a result, the Powai Police have registered a case under Section 291 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against the pet owner, identified as Ganesh Chukkal.

According to the police, a first information report (FIR) was filed based on a complaint by society resident Musil Jacob (39) on Monday. According to the FIR, Jacob claimed that Chukkal takes his three German Shepherds and a Cane Corso routinely for walks without muzzles or any form of safety restraints.

The complaint highlights a series of attacks

March 13 (10 am): One of Chukkal’s dogs allegedly attacked and injured a pet belonging to fellow resident Aditi Bhatia. When Bhatia confronted Chukkal, he reportedly responded dismissively.

March 24 (11.30 am): Another dog attack was reported, this time involving Michael Shaw’s pet, who was attacked and injured by one of Chukkal’s German Shepherds.

March 29 (1.30 pm): Resident Anuj Soor was walking his dog on the society ramp when Chukkal’s dog handler approached with a German Shepherd without a safety muzzle. The dog allegedly bit both Soor and his pet.

May 17: Jacob himself was attacked by one of Chukkal’s dogs.

Despite repeated warnings and complaints from multiple residents, Chukkal allegedly continued to ignore safety protocols. Sources at Powai Police Station confirmed that a formal complaint has been filed into the case and an investigation is underway. Chukkal is expected to be summoned for questioning soon.

The incidents have sparked serious concerns among residents, who are calling for stricter enforcement of pet ownership regulations and accountability for negligent owners in high-density residential areas.
