A man in Vasai murdered his stepmother in a fit of rage after she refused to give him money for online gaming. His father and uncle later helped conceal the crime, while a doctor who issued a false death certificate has also been booked. The accused buried the woman’s body, which police later exhumed from a burial ground and sent for post-mortem.

The victim, Arshiya Khusru, 61, was a practising lawyer at the Bombay High Court. She was killed by her 32-year-old stepson, Imran Amir Khusru. According to police, the incident occurred on July 26, when Imran visited Arshiya’s home and demanded R1.8 lakh to spend on an online game.

“When Arshiya Khusru refused, Imran became furious and smashed her head against the sharp corner of a wall near the kitchen washbasin. As she screamed in pain, he kicked her in the face, causing her to die on the spot,” said a police officer.

The officer further added, “After the murder, Imran stole two gold bangles and a chain from her bedroom cupboard. When his father, Amir Khusru, found out, he helped clean the bloodstains and instructed his brother, Salim Khusru, to approach a doctor. Dr RR Garg allegedly accepted money and issued a false death certificate claiming she had died of natural causes.”

The Crime Branch’s Unit 2 received a tip-off about the suspicious death and began an investigation. Amir had initially claimed that Arshiya slipped and hit her head on the floor. However, CCTV footage showed Imran entering the house at around 10.22 am on the day of the incident. Upon interrogation, Imran confessed to the crime.

On Monday evening, police exhumed Arshiya’s body from the Muslim burial ground at Koliwada in Vasai and sent it to JJ hospital for further post-mortem examination. Police have arrested Imran Khusru and his father, Amir Khusru, while Salim Khusru and Dr RR Garg have been detained.
