The Navi Mumbai Police seized mephedrone powder, a banned drug, worth Rs 17.5 lakh, officials said on Wednesday. They added that three persons have been arrested in connection with the seizure from the city.

According to a PTI report, the Navi Mumbai Police’s Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) laid a trap at the Belapur creek side following a tip-off which led them to three arrestees and subsequent seizure. Reportedly, the mission was put into action on Tuesday.

The police, during checking of the three persons, recovered nearly 175 grams of mephedrone powder from their possession, an official from CBD Belapur police station told PTI.  Mephedrone is a synthetic stimulant.

The three persons, including two from Mumbai, are between the ages 18 to 32 years and were placed under arrest on Tuesday night, according to the police. They have been booked under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, the officials added.

In a similar incident from Palghar, the police arrested a person and seized brown sugar from him. According to a report in PTI, the 30-year-old arrestee from Palghar district possessed brown sugar worth Rs 1.8 lakh.

The police, acting on a tip-off from their informants, laid a trap at Hanuman Nagar in the Nallasopara area in Palghar on Monday evening. After the arrested accused reached the spot, the police nabbed him.

While searching him, the police recovered 18 grams of brown sugar from his possession. Brown sugar is an adulterated form of heroin which is a semi-synthetic opioid.

As per the statement by senior police inspector Pramod Badakh to news agency PTI, a case has been registered against the accused. They have booked him under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The police added they are now trying to extract information from him concerning the source from whom the accused received the contraband and to whom he planned to sell it.

Recently, in a major crackdown on drug peddlers, Navi Mumbai police carried out raids across the city which resulted in the arrest of seven Nigerian nationals. The cops seized drugs worth Rs 19.05 crore from them.
