Western Railway's Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel have demonstrated exceptional performance in curbing passenger-related crimes, including theft and robbery, with the help of an extensive CCTV surveillance network. Under Operation Yatri Suraksha, the RPF has apprehended 674 individuals involved in passenger theft cases from January 2023 to September 20, 2023. These efforts have significantly contributed to enhancing passenger safety and security, an official statement said on Wednesday.
According to a press release by Sumit Thakur, Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, the RPF has focused its efforts on combating the theft of passengers' belongings on both suburban and long-distance trains. Utilizing crime intelligence and leveraging Operation Yatri Suraksha, Western Railway has installed a total of 3,857 CCTV cameras, including 488 cameras equipped with Facial Recognition System (FRS) technology. The FRS contains critical information about criminals, including their photographs, to effectively combat crimes against passengers.

From January 2023 to September 20, 2023, Western Railway's RPF has successfully arrested 674 individuals involved in cases of crimes against passengers. This includes seven recent cases where the accused were promptly apprehended.
Providing specific instances of their recent achievements, Thakur highlighted some notable cases:
On September 20, 2023, the Railway Protection Force at Borivali Post apprehended Manish Mohan Baswat (aged 24 yrs), who confessed to snatching a gold chain valued at Rs. 70,000. The offender has been handed over to GRP/Borivali for further legal action.
On the same day, the Crime Prevention and Detection Squad (CPDS) at Surat Post apprehended Sonu alias Rahul Somanath Manjare (aged 25 yrs) while he was stealing a mobile phone valued at Rs. 8,000.
In another incident on September 20, 2023, the CPDS team also arrested Abhishek (aged 20 yrs) through CCTV footage, and he admitted to stealing a mobile phone valued at Rs. 18,000. The offender has been handed over to GRP/Surat for further legal action.
On September 20, 2023, the CPDS at Churchgate Post apprehended Maqbool Sheikh (aged 40 yrs) after reviewing CCTV footage. The offender confessed to stealing a mobile phone valued at Rs. 14,000 and admitted his involvement in another case of mobile phone theft valued at Rs. 8,000. He has been handed over to GRP/Churchgate for further legal action.
The CPDS at Vadodara Post apprehended Abdul Sabir (aged 37 yrs) on September 20, 2023, based on suspicious behavior, recovering a mobile phone, ladies' purse, cosmetic items, and more. Additionally, on the same day, the CPDS team apprehended two culprits, Ankit (aged 22 yrs) at Vadodara station and Sahimraja (aged 27 yrs) at Sabarmati, both based on suspicious behavior. These offenders admitted to stealing mobile phones and were handed over to GRP/Vadodara and GRP/Sabarmati for further legal action.
Western Railway's RPF personnel continue to make commendable efforts to ensure passenger safety and security through their vigilance and utilization of advanced surveillance technology.
