The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday arrested the superintendent and inspector of the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST), Santacruz Division, Mumbai, for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 25,000.

CBI registered the case on Tuesday following allegations that the accused CGST officers demanded the bribe for issuing a favourable report and facilitating GST registration of a private firm. The firm is engaged in the business of trading in textiles and had applied online for GST registration on September 24.

It was also alleged that during inspection on October 3, the accused inspector, Lav Kumar Chittoria, allegedly demanded the bribe for himself and his superior officer, identified as Vikram. He allegedly threatened that the GST Registration Certificate of the firm would not be issued without such payment.

Based on the complaint, the CBI laid a trap and nabbed both the accused while accepting Rs 25,000 at the CGST West Mumbai Office on Monday.

Searches were also conducted at the premises of the accused officers.

Both the accused will be produced before a local court on Wednesday.
