Following hearings on over 300 suggestions and objections, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday published the final boundaries for electoral wards ahead of the upcoming municipal elections. The lottery for seat reservations will be held by the end of the month.

According to the final chart drawn by the civic body, Mumbai will have a total of 227 electoral wards for the upcoming BMC elections — the same number as in 2017. In the polls, 227 municipal councillors or corporators will be elected to the BMC’s general body. After hearing citizens’ suggestions and objections, changes have been made in six electoral wards in the suburbs, while none have been made in the island city.

This year, the BMC received a total of 492 suggestions and objections for delimitation of electoral ward boundaries, of which 307 — about 60 per cent — were found valid. A senior civic official said, “Any duplicate suggestions or those that do not fall within the scope of the exercise are considered invalid.” In 2022, when the BMC had invited suggestions and objections for ward delimitation, it had received 892 responses from citizens.

The civic body issued a statement on Monday saying, “The State Election Commission has approved the ward formation for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) General Elections–2025. The final ward structure has been published in the Government Gazette and on the BMC’s official website on October 6, 2025.”

The official ward boundaries can be viewed on the civic body’s website: (https://www.mcgm.gov.in/irj/portal/anonymous/qlBMCElectio2025) Approximately 54,000 voters have been considered per electoral ward, including members from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Notified Tribes. A margin of 10 per cent in population is allowed when determining the boundaries of each ward.

The notification states, “After reviewing the objections and suggestions received on the draft notification issued on August 22, 2025, the State Government, with the approval of the State Election Commission, Maharashtra, has finalised the division of wards for the BMC. The BMC area will be divided into 227 wards, and 227 councillors will be elected — one from each ward. This notification will come into effect for the next BMC general elections to be held after the date of this order.”
