'Policeman raped me at gunpoint, cops are not taking any action'

An internal departmental inquiry has been initiated against a senior inspector for allegedly raping a woman who is now 42 years old and threatening her for the past several years The accused cop Ravindra Jaisingh Medhsingh is currently posted at Naigaon Local Arms Unit in the city The woman fears for her and her familyrsquos safety as the inspector has threatened to kill her 19yearold son and husband Representational pic AFP The event dates back to 2002 when the woman was living with her husband and son at Dahisar One day the couple had a fight and she went to Dahisar police station to file a complaint against him At the time she reached the station Medhsingh who was then a subinspector was the duty officer He registered a noncognisable complaint and asked for her mobile number but she did not have one so she gave her landline phone number ldquoOver the next few days he would call me and ask about the fightsrdquo she said ldquoEverything was fine but the next year I again had a terrible fight with my husband I called up Medhsingh who called us to the Dahisar Crime Branch office which is next to the police stationrdquou00a0Once the couple arrived at the station Medhsingh asked the woman to go home but told her husband to stay The cop allegedly bashed him up badly and then called up the woman saying ldquoSee I have done a favour for you this is all just for yourdquo The same year in October Medhsingh called her to his office ldquoHe was alone in his chamber He told me he loved me and asked me to have an affair with him I was so scared by the incident that I told him to stop and ran to my homerdquo she said The following year in 2004 Medhsingh called her and told her that her husband was spotted with bar girls in Dadar when she had gone to her hometown in Rajasthan The cop allegedly even bribed the womanrsquos maidservant to back up his lie The maid told her that her husband would bring women home when she was not present The crime One day Medhsingh called her to Worli and when it was time for her to go home he told her hersquod drop her home But he took her to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Borivli ldquoIn the forest he got his revolver out and pointing it at me raped me He said if I went to the cops hersquod spread the news among all my family members and kin that I was the one who was having an illicit affair with himrdquo she said So she kept mum In November 2012 however he showed up at her house one day ldquoHe told my husband that hersquod had physical relations with me for the last several years that I was characterless This was completely false He then told me that if I didnrsquot continue sleeping with him hersquod harm my son and husbandrdquo she said ldquoMy husband and I went to Dahisar police station but only an NC was registered I wrote to the police commissioner the additional commissioner the DCP For the last one year I have been going to various police officers and stations But nothing has been done A police officer told me that the case would not go further because the public image of the Mumbai police was at risk I am so frightened and helpless A policeman has raped me and the police are not taking any action I fear for my life and that of husband and son who is only 19 Medhsingh is still threatening us I need justice and immediate action against Medhsingh The cop says When contacted the accused Senior Inspector Medhsingh said ldquoAll the allegations are baseless I met this woman in the late rsquo90s while I was posted at Dahisar police station She had some complaints against her husband After that I was not in touch with her She and her husband have filed a writ petition in court and since the court has not responded in their favour they are now filing complaints with other departments as wellrdquou00a0
