The monsoon is long over, but dreaded dengue still lurks around. A 25-year-old resident doctor from Nair Hospital succumbed to dengue haemorrhagic fever last morning, making him the 15th person to die of the deadly vector-borne disease.

Dr Sumedh Pazare, who worked with the preventive social medicine department, was admitted to the medical intensive care unit (MICU) of the hospital on Saturday when he observed blood in his vomit. However, doctors were only able to diagnose that he was suffering from dengue on Monday, but by then his condition had worsened.
At 7.15 am on Tuesday, he was declared dead, said a doctor from the hospital, adding that Dr Pazare was also suffering from sickle-cell disease. &ldquo;His condition worsened on Monday and reports confirmed that the cause of death was dengue haemorrhagic fever,&rdquo; added the doctor.
Hospital sources said that Dr Pazare&rsquo;s relatives were informed of his death and will come to the city to collect the body so that they can carry out the last rites in their hometown of Chandrapur. A colleague of Dr Pazare added that he might have contracted the disease while he was at a medical camp in Mankhurd.
Meanwhile, another doctor was also being treated for typhoid. A colleague requesting anonymity said, &ldquo;His condition is stable and he was treated on an OPD basis.&rdquo; When MiD DAY contacted the institute, Dr R Bharmal, dean of Nair Hospital, said he was in a meeting and would not be able to to comment on the issue.
