In a bid to complete its pending infrastructure projects, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has now decided to pay an additional Rs 1,610 crore to build 4,108 houses for project-affected people (PAP). This comes in view of hardly any response from developers to build homes for the PAP on the basis of transfer development rights (TDR). The corporation has a plan to eventually build 35,000 such houses in the city.

The BMC had allocated 5,550 homes in Mahul’s 72 buildings to the PAP, but they refused to stay in the area citing pollution and health hazards. The matter had reached the Supreme Court as well. Many of the infra projects are getting affected as the civic body does not have enough houses to shift the affected people. The BMC had initiated a plan to build 5,000 houses in each of the seven zones of the city for the PAP in 2019 in lieu of land and construction TDR.
