According to the police, the accused, identified as Babulal Patel, and the victim live in the Poisar slum area. The incident took place around 11 am on December 12 when the victim was playing near Patel’s residence.

Police said that Patel, who was alone at home, brought the victim inside and undressed her. The accused then allegedly raped the girl. “After coming home, the victim confided in her parents who lodged a case against the accused for molesting the girl,” said a police officer from the Samta Nagar police station.

Patel is unemployed and lives with his wife, children and grandchildren.

The day after the incident, police arrested Patel under Section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the IPC and produced him in a magistrate’s court where he was released on a bail of Rs 20,000.

However yesterday, the police received medical reports of the girl from Bhagwati Hospital, which suggested that she had been raped, after which the accused was rearrested.
