56 lakh farmers likely to benefit from Maharashtra’s Rs 36,585 crore loan waiver scheme

The Maharashtra cabinet has approved a Rs 36,585 crore farm loan waiver scheme aimed at benefiting nearly 56 lakh farmers. The package offers a waiver of up to Rs 2 lakh for eligible crop loan defaulters and a Rs 50,000 incentive for farmers who have regularly repaid their loans

The Maharashtra cabinet has reportedly approved the Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Shetkari Karjmafi Yojna, a farm loan waiver package worth Rs 36,585 crore, expected to benefit nearly 56 lakh farmers across the state. However, the official announcement has been deferred due to the Model Code of Conduct in force for elections to 17 Maharashtra Legislative Council seats. Polling is scheduled on June 18, while counting will take place on June 22.

Scheme details

Under the proposed scheme, farmers who have defaulted on crop loans will be eligible for a waiver of up to Rs 2 lakh. Farmers who have regularly repaid their loans will receive an incentive of Rs 50,000.
