63 percent survivors of sexual offences are under age 18: reports

As per the Praja Foundation’s recently released report, teenagers under the age of 18 made for 63 per cent sexual assault survivors. Around 712 rape cases were reported in 2015, a marked increase from 2014, when the figure stood at 609. Back in 2014, 56 per cent survivors were below 18 years of age.
In 2014, around 339 cases were registered under the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. In 2015, the figure rose to 448. “Within a span of five years (From 2011-2012 to 2015-2016) the reporting of rape cases has increased by 289 per cent, while molestation cases rose by 287 per cent.
